This course focuses on theme-based projects and engaging experiences using the VEX Robotics platform.
Students learn the fundamentals of STEM through fun activities that allow them to make a personal connection with the concept. With a hands-on and minds-on approach, students can build their bot with 280+ color-coordinated pieces, use safe circuitry (LED and optical sensors, smart motors, and magnets) to power their bot, and code their bot with VEXCode. This program fosters critical learning at an age when young minds are still open to their full potential.
Classes will focus on the following topics and projects:
Weeks 1-3:
Topic: Sensors and Self-Driving Cars
- Project 1: Modify the robot build to add an eye sensor.
- Project 2: Traffic Stop Challenge – Code the robot to auto-stop when red is detected.
- Project 3: Construction Zone Challenge – Program the robot to navigate a “construction zone,” using color to control its movements.
Weeks 4-5:
Topic: Martian Rock Formation and Rover Exploration
- Project: Use My Blocks to create a streamlined project where the robot collects and sorts Martian rock samples (VEX GO Disks) by color.
Weeks 6-8:
Topic: Robotics in Manufacturing – Sorting and Automation
- Project 1: Build a 1-axis Robot Arm and program it to move disks with the electromagnet.
- Project 2: Enhance the build to a 2-axis robot arm and code it to pick up disks detected by the eye sensor.
- Project 3: Program the 2-axis robot arm to detect and sort disks by color.
Weeks 9-12:
Topic: City Technology Rebuild Competition – Competitive Robotics
- Stage 1-4: Collaborate in teams to drive and program the robot to complete each stage of the competition.
- Final Competition: Work as a team to compete in the full City Technology Rebuild Competition.
