Join Samantha Cooper, Parish’s Lower School art teacher, for some fun and exciting fiber art!
From string art to macramé and Shibori dyeing, students will explore traditional art techniques with a creative and modern twist! Projects will be paired with notable fiber artists who use these types of techniques in their own work. By the end of the week, students will have a variety of crafts to take home and share.
Topics and projects may include:
- Topic 1: Wire & Bead Bow Banner
- Project: Create a unique and festive banner using wire bows adorned with beads, learning wire shaping, basic jewelry techniques, and banner assembly.
- Topic 2: Yarn Landscape on Board
- Project: Use yarn glued onto a board to create a textured landscape, encouraging students to use color and texture to represent natural elements.
- Topic 3: Shibori Dyeing
- Project: Introduce students to Shibori, a Japanese dyeing technique, allowing them to create unique, tie-dye-inspired patterns on fabric.
- Topic 4: Wire-Wrapped String Flowers or Cacti
- Project: Craft 3D flowers or cacti using wire wrapped with colorful string, teaching students about form and texture in fiber art.
- Topic 5: Handmade Paper from Toilet Paper
- Project: Create handmade sheets from toilet paper, introducing students to papermaking and upcycling.
- Topic 6: Abstract Paper Collage
- Project: Make an abstract collage by arranging torn or cut pieces of colored paper, focusing on balance, texture, and color harmony.
- Topic 7: Basket Making with Yarn and Recycled Materials
- Project: Learn basic basket-making techniques using yarn and a recycled container as a base, exploring form and function in fiber art.
